Herbert Wiggenhauser, Frank Hammel, Ralph Walther and Gregor Kutzschbach from Germany arrived in Annapolis at 3:40am.
The journey took them 7 days, 10 hours and 23 minutes and they averaged 16.94mph.
The charity they rode for was END POLIO NOW (www.rotary.org)- joint project by Bill Gates Foundation and Rotary Foundation International (District 1940)
Rotary, a volunteer service organization of 1.2 million men and women, made a commitment to immunize the world’s children against polio in 1985 and became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative three years later. The other partners are the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF.
Rotary’s primary responsibilities include fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer recruitment. To date, Rotary has already contributed more than $800 million to the polio eradication effort.
At the start of the race, Berliner stated that RAAM is a window of opportunity to support a global project on an international stage watched closely by the sports world. To eradicate a global disease should be a common goal in a globalized world.
Berliner rode with great team spirit and more importantly stuck together when times were tough. They encountered tough times during the race, but they got through it and can be proud of their effort.
Congratulations Team Berliner - Well Done!
