BERLINER: “Ich bin ein deputy.”
Flintstone, Maryland
June 27, 2009

The four rider team, Berliner, was also in that Flintstone Maryland gas station. I spoke with rider Herbert Wigginhuaser who related that the team is doing—“Good, very good. Much better than we thought. We were cycling just for the experience but now we are in sixth place. That’s pretty good.”
“We were made deputy sheriffs by the sheriff somewhere in California. They got our rider for speeding!” he said with a laugh. “He was going in the middle of the road, downhill very fast. The police says we are not allowed to that, that you must go to the right. We tell him that he doesn’t want to be passed by cars where it is narrow.” Fair enough. A highly contested field of racers battle for supremacy with such a large field (at time of this update 17 teams) the winners will be those that are fast in the saddle and supported by seamless crews who set-up each rider exchange without delay. If you stop moving forward all other teams are gaining 1 mile on you on an average of every 3 minutes.
